About
Miranda Musical Theatre Company

Miranda Musical Theatre Company (formerly Miranda Musical Society) is a Sutherland Shire based not-for-profit group. Operating as a formally registered Society with a member-elected Committee, its Charter is and always has been to present musical productions of the highest quality to our local and wider communities.

OUR HISTORY

In October 1967, with all members of the Miranda School of Arts Theatre Group being dissatisfied with its external management, a new Society was formed with the intention of presenting musicals suited to the existing members, whilst encouraging new members to join. Using draft constitutions adapted from other societies, and improving on them where possible, Laurel Gee, Alan Mundy and George Rixon drew up a Constitution, which was unanimously accepted by the members. Miranda Musical Society was formed.

The inaugural management committee was elected:
President - George Rixon
Secretary - Laurel Gee
Treasurer - Shirley Oberg
Publicity - Bernard Broughton
Social Secretary - Darryl Francis
Members representatives - Sandra Cook and Don Loveday

House Manager - Hal Spurway

Social Committee - Brian Harvey, Coral Hesford, Sue Howie, Val Paton, Myrtle Wardrop, Wendy Wells

Director - Alan Mundy

Musical Director - George Rixon

Ballet Mistress - Jacqueline Wurr

The Society continued rehearsing at the Miranda School of Arts in Kiora Road until after it was sold in 1969 and, in the early 1970s, the Como School of Arts became its permanent rehearsal hall. Shows were staged at the Port Hacking High School auditorium at Miranda until moving to the Sutherland Civic Centre/Sutherland Entertainment Centre (now The Pavilion Performing Arts Centre) in the late 1980s.

Miranda Musical Theatre Company has been privileged to present World, Australian and New South Wales’ Premieres and Amateur Premieres including Little Me (1978), Les Misérables (1993) The World Goes ‘Round (1999), and The Boy from Oz (2008).

In December 2022, it was decided by the Management Committee and general members to formally change the official name of Miranda Musical Society, to Miranda Musical Theatre Company, to reach a wider audience and engage with a new generation of music theatre performers and creatives.
