OUR HISTORY

In October 1967, the members of the Miranda School of Arts Theatre Group, dissatisfied with its external management, embarked on a bold new journey. They founded a new society, aiming to stage musicals tailored to their talents while welcoming fresh faces. Spearheaded by Laurel Gee, Alan Mundy, and George Rixon, they crafted a Constitution from the best elements of other societies' charters, receiving unanimous approval from their peers. Thus, the Miranda Musical Society was born.

The inaugural management committee, a powerhouse of passionate individuals, was elected:
-
President: George Rixon
-
Secretary: Laurel Gee
-
Treasurer: Shirley Oberg
-
Publicity: Bernard Broughton
-
Social Secretary: Darryl Francis
-
Members Representatives: Sandra Cook and Don Loveday
-
House Manager: Hal Spurway
-
Social Committee: Brian Harvey, Coral Hesford, Sue Howie, Val Paton, Myrtle Wardrop, Wendy Wells
-
Director: Alan Mundy
-
Musical Director: George Rixon
-
Ballet Mistress: Jacqueline Wurr
The Society thrived, rehearsing at the Miranda School of Arts in Kiora Road until its sale in 1969. In the early 1970s, the Como School of Arts became their permanent rehearsal space. Their performances graced the Port Hacking High School auditorium in Miranda until they found a new home at the Sutherland Civic Centre (now The Pavilion Performing Arts Centre) in the late 1980s.
Miranda Musical Theatre Company has had the honor of presenting numerous premieres, including:
-
Little Me (1978)
-
Les Misérables (1993)
-
The World Goes 'Round (1999)
-
The Boy from Oz (2008)
In December 2022, embracing the future while honoring their rich legacy, the Management Committee and general members decided to rebrand from Miranda Musical Society to Miranda Musical Theatre Company. This change aims to captivate a wider audience and inspire a new generation of musical theatre enthusiasts and creators.
